What is the Difference Between Deodorant And Antiperspirant?
It's not sweat that causes underarm odor, well not completely.
The culprit is actually bacterium.
In fact, sweat is odorless when released by the body regardless of temperature or physical activity. The bacteria that lives on our skin eats the sweat, which produces an odor by-product.
Deodorants, antiperspirants, or a mixture of the two, tackle body odor and wetness in different ways...
Deodorants Fight Odor
Regardless of whether a deodorant is unscented or otherwise, they do not stop excess sweating or wetness. The basics behind deodorant is to neutralize body odor killing sweat causing bacteria.
Most often a product marketed solely as deodorant doesn't usually contain aluminum, which has been found to cause health concerns in some individuals. The overall goal of deodorant is achieved through the use of fragrance, antimicrobials, and other similar ingredients to curb or kill bacterial activity.
Antiperspirants Curb Wetness
In comparison to deodorants, the main objective of antiperspirants is to stop sweating by keeping the armpits dry killing odor causing bacteria. Antiperspirants and their sweat protecting strength depend greatly on aluminum to achieve these results.
When aluminum is combined with natural acids in your skin, aluminum forms somewhat of a jelly like substance that essentially acts like a plug to stop your glands from sweating.
Did you know...?
Sweating is not the only way your body keeps cool. Interestingly, the body also regulates temperature by transferring blood to the skin. This most often results in the red, flushed appearance that accompanies skin after exercise or other forms of physical excursion.
Why Choose an Unscented Deodorant?
With respect to choosing an unscented deodorant over one with fragrance added to it, basically comes down to personal preference. While scented deodorants are great for the smell as well as their overall appeal; the scent does eventually dissipate. Whereas, unscented deodorants essential work the same way–to fight and conquer odor. The only difference usually being the lack of scent.
Interestingly, the underarms are one of the most sensitive areas of the body. The skin is thinner then the rest of our skin. To keep the underarms protected, be sure to keep the skin exfoliated and Hydrated. Use a gentle exfoliating wash or light bar soap to keep your skin healthy and in peak condition.

Do Men and Women Sweat the Same?
Although you're reading a review on the best unscented deodorants for men, there is one major question that most often remains unanswered: Do men and women sweat the same basic stuff?
- One Study concluded that men sweat sooner, at a lower body or seasonal temperature, and will release more sweat to compensate for the fluctuations in temperature.
- While another study found that the variations in sweat between men and women count for a maximum of only a five percent difference in total.
Ultimately, there is little evidence that men and women sweat differently, at different times or at differing rates.
Are Unscented Deodorants Inferior to Fragrant Antiperspirants and Deodorants?
Labels are confusing. For the most part, an unscented or natural deodorant should be what you're shopping for. Deodorants that are essentially unscented are most often a healthier and safer alternative. No artificial fragrances or other synthetic ingredients are usually added to the product.
When shopping for an unscented deodorant its important to be familiar with ingredients that may cause potential health issues
- Look for ingredients that contain no harmful or synthetic chemicals.
- Unscented doesn't necessarily mean fragrance free.
- Shop for an unscented deodorant that suits your lifestyle and activity level.
- Follow Your Instincts. Only you can choose the right cologne for you.
Now that I've covered some of the basics, let's get into some of my favorite products.
This unscented deodorant is great for the athletic and active guy. Gold Bond Friction Defense includes an anti-chafe ingredient that prevents itching, redness and irritation due to pain and annoying friction. Here's the deal. Although this product can be used for under the arms, it's not necessarily an underarm product, it's actually meant for groin. This multi-functional unscented deodorant is great for all day wear and does not need reapplication.
Primal Pit Paste is a natural deodorant you can literally count on. It's not only effective on body odor, but also great at eliminating overall wetness. Primal products contain all natural ingredients and work well for men with sensitive skin. This natural unscented deodorant contains no animal ingredients or harsh chemicals.
Made From all-natural mineral salts, this unscented deodorant contains no harmful chemicals, aluminum or parabens. To use this deodorant slightly wet the top of the rock and apply to clean and dry skin. For optimum results, use daily and apply immediately after the shower. Depending on body chemistry, multiple applications should not be need throughout the day.
If you have been looking for an unscented deodorant that not only works on odor but is a healthier alternative, Organic Island has you covered. This unscented deodorant ingredients list is so natural it's not only safe for men and women, but children as well. Similar to other natural or organic deodorants, Organic Island may leave a few white flakes or slight residue. But nothing out of control, and can removed through regular showering and clothes washing.
Although not an antiperspirant, Arm and Hammer's unscented deodorant is effective in fighting odor while providing all day protection. This unscented deodorant contains no aluminum or parabens. Combines the odor fighting properties of baking soda with natural plant extract. Arm and Hammer keeps you smelling clean and fresh the natural way.
The Final Word
Whether your grooming game is laid back and relaxed or impeccable to a fault, choosing the right unscented deodorant reaches far beyond good grooming. In many respects, an unscented (or natural) deodorant is often a healthier alternative due their lack of potentially harmful chemicals. My choice is Primal Pit Paste. It's natural ingredients coupled with it's unique and non-irritating texture is the best.
